To register for the citizenship exam, you must book an appointment in advance. Follow this step-by-step registration procedure:
1. Locate an Authorized BAMF Test Center
The exam is conducted at accredited local institutions, usually your municipal adult education center (Volkshochschule - VHS) or selected local language schools. Search the official BAMF directory to find testing centers in your area.
2. Book in Person
You must register in person. Bring your valid passport, your residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel), and the €25 examination fee. You will fill out an official registration form indicating your personal details and desired test date.
3. Plan 3-6 Months Ahead
Because of the massive volume of applications following the 2024/2026 citizenship reforms, test spots are extremely limited. Waiting times to get an exam date can range from 2 to 6 months. Plan and book early!
